Two teachers killed in heinous shooting

OSHAWA, CANADA – The community of Oshawa is mourning the loss of two beloved teachers who were tragically killed in a weekend shooting. Patrick Montgomery and Andrieana Montgomery, whose lives were intertwined with local schools, the Ontario Hockey League, and the arts community, are being remembered for their profound impact.

Condolences and heartfelt tributes for the couple poured in on Monday, both online and in-person, from two school boards where they taught, as well as from local organizations. The Durham Regional Police responded to reports of a shooting in the area of Jane Avenue and Glenforest Street around 12:35 p.m. on Saturday. Officers discovered Patrick Montgomery, 42, who had been shot at a home on Glenforest Street.

While investigating the scene, police received information leading them to another address on Glenforest Street, where they found Andrieana Montgomery, also 42, dead from gunshot wounds. Mark Gordon, a 30-year-old from Oshawa, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Authorities confirmed that Gordon knew both victims, although the motive remains under investigation. Police clarified that the incident was not domestic-related.

The Oshawa Generals hockey team expressed their sorrow over the loss of Patrick Montgomery, who played as a left-winger from 1999 to 2002. “It is with a saddened heart that the Oshawa Generals organization express condolences for the passing of former left-winger, Pat Montgomery and Andrieana Montgomery,” said Roger Hunt, the team’s manager and vice-president. Montgomery later played for Brock University and several other teams, leaving a lasting legacy in the hockey community.

Patrick Montgomery was also a teacher with the Durham Catholic District School Board. The board expressed their shock and deep sadness over his sudden loss, noting that many in the community are grieving. “We extend our prayers and condolences to everyone who has been impacted by this incomprehensible tragedy,” the board stated.

Andrieana Montgomery, a dedicated art teacher at Bowmanville High School, was praised by principal David Boone for her dynamic teaching and profound influence on students and colleagues. “She championed Indigenous perspectives while instilling a passion for her subject matter,” Boone wrote in a message to parents. Andrieana had worked for the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board for 18 years, with the last five years spent at BHS.

The Oshawa Folk Arts Council and the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington also paid tribute to Andrieana, highlighting her contributions to the arts and her advocacy for Indigenous and Ukrainian cultures. Dionne Powlenzuk, executive director of the Visual Arts Centre, noted that Andrieana’s impact as an art teacher, artist, and community member would be deeply missed.

Neighbors and friends remembered Patrick Montgomery as a kind and caring individual who was often seen playing with children in the neighborhood. The community continues to grapple with the devastating loss of two individuals who touched many lives through their dedication to education, sports, and the arts.
