One suspect faces a murder charge while police continue searching for answers in a second deadly shooting.
CHARLOTTE, NC — Two men were killed in separate shootings that occurred minutes apart early Sunday in Charlotte, leaving another person injured and prompting homicide investigations in Uptown and northwest Charlotte, police said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police identified the victims as 37-year-old Erick Holman and 32-year-old Jeremiah Easter. Holman was wounded near East Fifth and North McDowell streets, where officers also found a two-vehicle crash. Easter was found shot outside a location in the 3600 block of Bardot Drive.
Police arrested 38-year-old Rondreaus Cureton in connection with Holman’s death after a brief pursuit. Cureton faces charges including murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, three counts of felony hit-and-run, larceny of a motor vehicle, common-law robbery and felonious restraint. Police have not announced an arrest in Easter’s death.
Officers were sent shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday to East Fifth and North McDowell streets after receiving a report of a robbery, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. They arrived to find two crashed vehicles and four people who needed medical care.
Holman had an apparent gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other three people were hospitalized with injuries that police described as not life-threatening.
At about 1:38 a.m., patrol officers took Cureton into custody following the pursuit, police said. He was brought to the department’s Law Enforcement Center for an interview with homicide detectives and was later transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said they were not seeking any additional persons of interest in the Uptown case. Investigators have not released further details about what led to the reported robbery, the shooting or the crash. They also have not explained how each of the charges filed against Cureton relates to the sequence of events.
Minutes after the first call, officers responded to the 3600 block of Bardot Drive in northwest Charlotte. They found Easter suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. MEDIC pronounced him dead at the scene, police said.
A second person from the Bardot Drive shooting was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities have not released that person’s identity or said whether investigators believe the two victims were targeted.
Homicide detectives and crime-scene investigators collected evidence from both locations. Major Crash Unit detectives also responded to the Uptown scene because of the two-vehicle collision. Police have not said whether the two homicide cases are connected, and available information indicates they are being investigated separately.
Both investigations remained active Monday. Police said additional information would be released as it becomes available.
