Police have not determined how the 40-year-old woman died or whether foul play was involved.
NEW YORK CITY, NY — New York City police are investigating the death of a 40-year-old woman who was found unconscious and unresponsive early Saturday inside a basement apartment in Brooklyn’s Borough Park neighborhood.
Officers responded shortly before 3:45 a.m. to reports of a woman in distress at a home on 64th Street between 16th and 17th avenues, according to police. Emergency responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine the cause and manner of death. Police had not said by Sunday evening whether investigators suspected foul play or expected the case to be classified as a homicide.
The woman’s identity had not been released as authorities worked to notify her family. Police also had not disclosed who called for help, whether anyone else was inside the apartment or what officers found when they arrived.
An NYPD Crime Scene Unit vehicle was seen near the home Sunday as detectives continued their investigation. Authorities had not announced any arrests or identified a suspect.
Neighbors described the area as generally quiet, though some said people living at the property could sometimes be heard playing music or gathering late at night. One neighbor told CBS News New York that he heard arguing and yelling on the night the woman died.
Another neighbor said she did not hear a disturbance Friday night or early Saturday. Olga Burke, who lives nearby, said it was upsetting to learn that a relatively young woman had died.
Police have not released information confirming whether the sounds reported by neighbors were connected to the woman’s death. The accounts remain part of the circumstances detectives are examining as they seek to establish a timeline.
The investigation remained ongoing Monday. The medical examiner’s findings are expected to help determine whether the death resulted from natural causes, an accident or criminal conduct.
