Authorities captured Chase Layne Patin after an overnight search that began when a deputy was wounded during a family disturbance call.
CHANNELVIEW, TX — A man accused of shooting a Harris County sheriff’s deputy and fleeing in a patrol vehicle was arrested Thursday morning after an overnight manhunt in the Channelview area, authorities said. The wounded deputy remained hospitalized in fair condition and was expected to recover.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 25-year-old Chase Layne Patin. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Patin was taken into custody without further incident near the area where officers had been searching through the night. Authorities found him in a shed behind a home off West Brentwood Street in Channelview, according to reports citing the sheriff’s office.
The search began Wednesday evening after a deputy responded to a family disturbance in the 1100 block of Bayou Drive, near the East Freeway in east Harris County. Gonzalez said the deputy was fired upon during the response and was struck in the lower part of his body. The deputy was taken to a hospital, where authorities later listed him in fair condition. Officials had not publicly identified the deputy as of Thursday morning.
Authorities allege Patin left the shooting scene in a sheriff’s office patrol vehicle. Investigators later recovered the vehicle near Dell Dale and the East Freeway, but Patin was not with it. The discovery shifted the search to the surrounding area as sheriff’s deputies and other law enforcement agencies worked through the night to locate him.
A Blue Alert was issued early Thursday as the search continued. Authorities had warned that Patin could be armed and urged members of the public not to approach him. The alert was followed by an increased law enforcement presence around Channelview as officers searched neighborhoods and other locations near where the patrol vehicle had been abandoned.
Shortly before 7:45 a.m. Thursday, Gonzalez announced that Patin had been apprehended. Authorities said Patin was located inside a shed behind a residence and came out while showing his hands. He was arrested without further violence and transported for questioning. Officials did not immediately release a detailed account of how investigators tracked him to the property.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said Patin faces three counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer. The allegations against him have not been proven in court, and additional details about the case, including the circumstances immediately preceding the gunfire, had not been fully released Thursday morning.
The shooting and search unfolded over roughly half a day, beginning with the family disturbance response Wednesday evening and continuing into Thursday morning. Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the effort to locate Patin after the deputy was wounded and the patrol vehicle was taken, according to Gonzalez.
Authorities have not released the wounded deputy’s name or a full account of the family disturbance that brought law enforcement to Bayou Drive. The sheriff’s office said additional information would be released as the investigation continues. The deputy remained hospitalized in fair condition Thursday and was expected to recover.
