Police said several gunmen opened fire near an alley before a wounded woman crashed her vehicle into a CTA bus.
CHICAGO, IL — One person was killed and six others were wounded Sunday afternoon when several gunmen opened fire near an alley in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, Chicago police said. One of the wounded, a woman driving nearby, crashed into a CTA bus after she was shot.
The shooting happened about 12:17 p.m. Sept. 13 in the 700 block of North Christiana Avenue. Police said six people were standing outside near an alley when two vehicles approached. Multiple people got out of the vehicles and fired at the group before leaving the scene. Police had not announced any arrests as of early Monday.
An unidentified man was shot multiple times and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Authorities had not released his name or age. A 24-year-old man who was shot in the leg and stomach was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
The other people wounded near the alley included a 14-year-old boy who was shot in the thighs, an 18-year-old man struck in the shoulder, a 21-year-old man shot in the leg and a 26-year-old man wounded in the foot, police said. They were reported in good condition. Several of the victims were treated at Stroger Hospital, while some made their own way to the hospital.
Police said a seventh shooting victim, a 30-year-old woman, was inside a vehicle when gunfire struck her in the hip. After she was wounded, her vehicle crashed into a Chicago Transit Authority bus. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and was reported in good condition. The bus driver was also taken to a hospital for observation. Authorities did not report additional injuries aboard the bus.
The shooting happened in daylight near Chicago Avenue, prompting a large emergency response and disrupting an area where residents were going about their Sunday activities. Police have not publicly identified the attackers, described a possible motive or said whether the people who were shot were specifically targeted.
Residents interviewed near the scene described hearing a rapid burst of gunfire. Belinda Lynn-Wiley told ABC7 Chicago that she and her family were preparing to leave for church when the shooting began. Community activist James Aziz said afterward that neighborhood residents need additional support and opportunities for young people. Police have not indicated whether those witnesses saw the shooting itself.
The attack came weeks after another shooting in Humboldt Park left six people wounded on July 26. That earlier case occurred in the 900 block of North Central Park Avenue and involved different circumstances. Authorities have not announced any connection between the incidents.
Area Four detectives are investigating Sunday’s shooting. Police had not reported anyone in custody or released additional information about the two vehicles or the people suspected of opening fire. The identity of the man who died remained unreleased pending further official information.
