Three victims suffered serious injuries after gunfire erupted near a neighborhood gathering, while the FBI is helping local investigators.
TUSCALOOSA, AL — Eight people, including juveniles, were wounded in a shooting late Saturday near a neighborhood gathering in west Tuscaloosa, police said, as investigators continued Monday to seek information and video that could help identify those responsible.
Tuscaloosa police were called to the 2600 block of 22nd Street at about 10:48 p.m. Saturday after reports that multiple people had been shot. Officers arrived to find a large crowd and began providing medical aid before Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue and NorthStar EMS reached the scene. Three victims initially had serious injuries, authorities said.
Police first reported seven shooting victims. The total increased to eight Sunday after another person went to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot graze wound. Authorities said juveniles were among those injured. Police reported Sunday morning that the seven victims known at that time were in stable condition.
The shooting happened near the site of an outdoor neighborhood block party that had been permitted by the city until 10 p.m., according to investigators. Police said the gunfire occurred after the permitted event had ended. Authorities have not said what led to the shooting or whether the person or people responsible had attended the gathering.
Investigators found dozens of shell casings in the area, and several parked, unoccupied vehicles were struck by gunfire, police said. Authorities have not released the victims’ names or ages and have not announced any arrests. They also have not publicly identified a suspect or suspects.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit and the Tuscaloosa Police Crime Scene Unit are investigating. The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and University of Alabama Police Department also assisted with security at the scene and at DCH Regional Medical Center as officers worked to manage the large number of people involved.
The FBI’s Birmingham office is assisting the investigation and has established a digital media tip line for photographs and video connected to the shooting. Investigators are seeking cellphone recordings, surveillance footage and other information from people who attended the gathering or were in the surrounding area Saturday night.
Police said investigators have been interviewing witnesses as they work to determine the circumstances of the shooting. No motive has been released, and authorities have not said how many people may have fired weapons. The investigation remains active, with additional information expected to be released as it is confirmed.
