Police said gunmen in two vehicles opened fire on the 22-year-old man before fleeing the South Side neighborhood.
CHICAGO, IL — A 22-year-old man was shot and killed while sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle early Sunday in Chicago’s Fuller Park neighborhood, authorities said.
Chicago police said two vehicles pulled alongside the man’s vehicle in the 4200 block of South Wentworth Avenue before multiple gunmen opened fire. The shooters then fled in the vehicles, according to police. The victim suffered gunshot wounds to his chest and shoulder and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting remained under investigation Sunday, and police had not announced any arrests. Authorities also had not released a possible motive or identified any suspects. Area 1 detectives are handling the homicide investigation.
Local news reports differed on the precise time of the shooting. ABC7 Chicago, citing police, reported that it happened at about 5:58 a.m., while CBS News Chicago reported that it occurred shortly before 4 a.m. Both reports placed the shooting in the 4200 block of South Wentworth Avenue and described the victim as a 22-year-old man who was inside a vehicle.
According to police accounts reported by the two stations, the man was in the driver’s seat when two vehicles approached. CBS News Chicago reported that multiple gunmen in both vehicles fired at him before the vehicles left the area. Police have not publicly provided descriptions of the shooters or the vehicles in the reports reviewed Sunday.
The victim’s name had not been officially released in the police-based local reports reviewed Sunday. Authorities had also not announced whether investigators recovered a firearm, surveillance video or other evidence from the scene.
