GLENDALE, AZ – A shocking incident unfolded at Arizona State University (ASU) as a student allegedly stabbed a peer during an unprovoked attack in a classroom on September 19.
Maricopa County law enforcement has identified Kaci Lenise-Charlie Sloan, 19, as the accused and charged her with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault using a lethal weapon, and disorderly conduct involving a weapon. The attack was carried out against another student, Mara Daffron.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by Daffron’s neighbors to provide financial support for her recovery. According to the campaign, Daffron was stabbed multiple times. However, the victim is reportedly “making great progress and is on the mend.”
The shocking incident has been confirmed by eyewitness accounts. Matthew McCormick, another ASU student, jumped to Daffron’s aid, disarming Sloan, which may have prevented further harm to Daffron.
Investigative reports stated that Sloan, without provocation or uttering any words, allegedly attacked Daffron. Furthermore, authorities found a note from Sloan claiming she had plans to “hurt somebody” during class the day of the attack. She later allegedly admitted to detectives her intent to harm a person, subsequently choosing Daffron as she was “an easier target.”
Following the incident, Daffron received immediate medical attention and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
ASU expressed its condemnation of the alleged attack, referring to it as deeply saddening. An ASU spokesperson stated that Sloan was arrested for first-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault with a deadly instrument, interference with an educational institution, and disorderly conduct. She is currently being held on a cash bond amounting to $250,000.
