Police said the victim, Daryl Sherwood, died after being shot on West Kendall Circle.
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — A 25-year-old Virginia Beach man was arrested after his father was shot on Father’s Day and later died at a hospital, police said.
Dylan Sherwood was charged with voluntary manslaughter and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony after the June 21 shooting in the 2100 block of West Kendall Circle. The victim was identified as Daryl Sherwood, 55, of Virginia Beach. Police said the case remains under investigation by the department’s Detective Bureau.
Emergency dispatchers received a report of a shooting at 8:13 p.m. June 21, according to Virginia Beach police. Officers went to the West Kendall Circle location and found an adult man who had been shot. The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police later identified him as Daryl Sherwood. The department said its Homicide Squad took the lead in the case and arrested Dylan Sherwood in connection with the shooting.
Police have not released a detailed account of what led to the gunfire. They also have not said whether anyone else was present when officers arrived or whether a weapon was recovered at the scene. In a statement, the Virginia Beach Police Department said the charges are accusations and that Dylan Sherwood is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. No additional injuries were listed in the city’s public statement.
The shooting happened in a residential area of Virginia Beach on Father’s Day, a holiday that turned into the date of a homicide investigation for one local family. The police statement identified both men as Virginia Beach residents and listed Dylan Sherwood as 25 and Daryl Sherwood as 55. The case moved quickly from an emergency call to a homicide investigation after the victim died at the hospital.
Voluntary manslaughter is a felony charge used in Virginia in cases where prosecutors allege an unlawful killing that does not meet the legal standard for murder. The firearm count is a separate felony tied to the alleged use of a gun during the offense. Court dates, bond status and attorney information were not included in the police announcement. The next public steps are expected to come through the courts or additional police updates.
The department’s statement gave few details about the scene beyond the block number and time of the emergency call. Police said the Detective Bureau is continuing the investigation. The department also said anyone with information may contact investigators, but it did not describe what evidence detectives are seeking or whether surveillance video, witness statements or other records are part of the case.
The case stood Wednesday with Dylan Sherwood facing two felony counts and the police investigation still open. No motive had been publicly released, and no hearing date was announced in the initial police statement.
