Police are investigating whether speed and an illegal left turn contributed to the deadly two-car collision.
LOS ANGELES, CA — Two men were killed and a child was seriously injured Friday morning when two cars collided in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles, authorities said.
The July 10 crash occurred in the 3300 block of West 78th Street. Police said a Toyota Camry was making an illegal left turn when it was struck by a black BMW. The force of the collision caused severe damage to the vehicles and brought emergency crews to the residential area.
Two men traveling in the Camry died at the scene, according to police. A child who had been riding in the Camry’s backseat was taken to a hospital. Some initial reports described the child’s condition as critical, while officials had not publicly released the child’s age or a detailed medical update.
The BMW’s driver suffered injuries described as minor. Authorities did not immediately release the names or ages of the people involved. Officials also had not said whether any other passengers were in the vehicles when the crash occurred.
The father of the Camry’s passenger told NBC Los Angeles that his son had been traveling to Los Angeles International Airport. He said his son planned to fly to Chicago to meet his newborn baby. The passenger’s identity had not been officially released.
Investigators said drugs and alcohol were not believed to have contributed to the collision. Detectives were examining whether the BMW’s speed played a role, along with the Camry driver’s left turn.
Police had not announced any arrests or citations connected to the crash. The investigation remained active as detectives worked to determine the vehicles’ movements before the impact and awaited further information about the injured child.
