Police arrested a 20-year-old Vallejo man after a July Fourth collision in a parking lot.
VALLEJO, CA — A 20-year-old Benicia woman remained in critical condition after she was struck by a car during a stunt-driving incident in a Vallejo parking lot on the night of July Fourth, according to police and local news reports.
Vallejo police said dispatchers began receiving reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at about 10:40 p.m. July 4. The incident occurred in a parking lot as a driver was reportedly performing circular maneuvers commonly known as “donuts.” The woman suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.
The injured woman was identified by KTVU as Alexis Hardhart. The television station reported that Hardhart was struck by a vehicle driven by her boyfriend while he was performing the stunt. Witnesses told the station that the driver left the scene after the collision. Authorities have not released a detailed medical update beyond describing her injuries as critical.
Police identified the driver as Alejandro Rodriguez-Zetina, a 20-year-old Vallejo resident. Officers found and arrested him July 5, one day after the collision, according to statements posted by the Vallejo Police Department.
Rodriguez-Zetina was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing injury, reckless driving and exhibition of speed, police said. The allegations are accusations, and no information about a court appearance, plea or formal filing by prosecutors was immediately available.
Investigators have not publicly released a full account of how Hardhart came to be outside the vehicle or the exact sequence of impacts. Police also have not said whether other vehicles were involved. Authorities did not immediately disclose whether speed, mechanical problems or another factor contributed to the collision beyond the alleged stunt driving.
The incident occurred during Fourth of July celebrations, when people had gathered in the area. Police received multiple calls about the collision, according to the department’s account. Local reporting described people at the scene attempting to help Hardhart before emergency crews arrived.
Officials have not released evidence indicating that drugs or alcohol played a role. Police also have not announced any additional arrests or said whether investigators are seeking other participants or witnesses. The inquiry remained active as authorities reviewed the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Hardhart remained hospitalized with life-threatening injuries as of the latest public report. Police had not announced further charges or released additional information about her condition by Saturday.
