Man Fatally Shot Inside Hollywood Apartment Building

Police said the early-morning shooting near Sunset Boulevard did not appear to be a random attack.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A man was found fatally shot inside a Hollywood apartment building early Friday, prompting a homicide investigation and a search for the person responsible, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers responded at about 2:15 a.m. to reports of gunfire in the 7000 block of Lanewood Avenue, near Orange Drive and Sunset Boulevard. They found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds inside the building. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities described the victim as a man around 30 years old. His name had not been released Friday pending confirmation of his identity and notification of his family.

Detectives had not determined whether the victim lived at the apartment building. Police said preliminary information indicated that the shooting was not random, but investigators had not announced a possible motive or explained why they believed the man may have been targeted.

No suspect description was immediately available. Police were searching for whoever fired the shots, and no arrest had been announced as of Friday. Investigators also had not said whether a weapon or other physical evidence was recovered from the building.

Residents told KABC-TV that they heard about four gunshots during the early-morning disturbance. Detectives did not believe those residents saw the shooting, according to the station. Police had not publicly confirmed the number of shots fired.

The apartment building is in a busy section of Hollywood near Sunset Boulevard, hotels, restaurants and other businesses. One nearby resident told KABC-TV that news of the killing was shocking because serious crime was not something he commonly encountered in the neighborhood.

Investigators had released few details about what happened before the gunfire or how the shooter entered and left the property. It also remained unclear whether the victim and the shooter knew each other or whether anyone else was inside the apartment when the shooting occurred.

The investigation remained active Friday. Police had not identified a suspect, disclosed a motive or announced any arrests.
