Police said license plate reader data helped investigators identify two suspects after one man was killed and two others were wounded.
SAN JOSE, CA — Two San Jose residents have been arrested in connection with a triple shooting that killed one man and wounded two others in late July, police said.
Jose Rivera, 30, and Laura Beltran-Gaitan, 25, were arrested July 31, five days after the shooting near Seventh Street and Leo Avenue, according to the San Jose Police Department. Rivera was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of murder. Beltran-Gaitan was booked on suspicion of being an accessory after the fact. Police announced the arrests Aug. 6.
The shooting was reported at about 2:55 a.m. July 26. Officers responding to the area of Seventh Street and Leo Avenue found two adult men suffering from gunshot wounds, police said. One of the men died at the scene despite efforts to save him. The second was taken to a hospital in critical condition and was later stabilized.
At about the same time, officers saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed near 11th and Humboldt streets. Police stopped the vehicle and found a third adult man inside who had also been shot. He was taken to a hospital, where his injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.
Police have not released the name of the man who died. The department identified him only as a San Jose resident. Authorities also have not publicly detailed the relationship, if any, between the three victims or explained what led to the gunfire.
Homicide detectives took over the investigation and used automated license plate reader data to identify Rivera and Beltran-Gaitan as primary suspects, police said. The department has not publicly described what vehicle information was obtained or how that data connected the suspects to the shooting.
Detectives, assisted by the department’s Covert Response Unit, located and arrested both suspects in San Jose on July 31, according to police. The allegations against them have not been proven in court, and police have not announced any additional arrests in the case.
The death is being investigated as San Jose’s 16th homicide of 2026. Police have not released a possible motive and said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
The San Jose Police Department said its homicide unit continues to investigate the case. No further information about the surviving victims’ conditions or the events leading up to the shooting had been publicly released as of Friday.
