Police say the suspects stole more than $60,000 in prescription medication and cash during a series of early-morning break-ins.
NEW YORK CITY, NY — Police are searching for a group accused of targeting eight pharmacies in New York City, stealing more than $60,000 worth of prescription medication and cash during a burglary spree that began in July and continued into September.
Investigators have linked the suspects to incidents in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx, according to police information reported by News 12. Surveillance video released by authorities shows several people entering pharmacies during early-morning hours. Police say a gray SUV was used during the pattern. Some of the burglaries resulted in large losses, while the suspects left empty-handed in four of the reported incidents.
The series began July 6 at a pharmacy in Queens, where investigators said the suspects entered at about 4:23 a.m. Police said approximately $20,300 worth of medication was taken, along with $8,000 from a safe and another $150 from a cash register. Authorities connected the group to two additional pharmacy burglaries in Queens later that morning.
The pattern continued the following day in Brooklyn. At about 4:57 a.m. on July 7, police said the suspects tried to enter a pharmacy at 41-57 Browne St. but were unable to get through the front door. Roughly an hour later, investigators said the group targeted another pharmacy at 2116 Rockaway Parkway.
Police said the suspects succeeded in entering the Rockaway Parkway location and removed approximately $28,400 worth of medication. Authorities have not publicly detailed the types of prescription drugs taken in the incidents reviewed for this report. No information indicating that anyone was injured during the burglary pattern was included in the available police account.
Investigators said the suspects generally targeted the businesses during the early morning, when the pharmacies were closed. Surveillance footage released in connection with the investigation shows people forcing their way through storefront entrances. In one recorded incident, a person appears to use a tool to break a glass front door before others enter the business. Police also said a crowbar was used in some of the break-ins.
The investigation later expanded to a Sept. 5 attempted burglary at a pharmacy on East Gun Hill Road in the Bronx. Police said the group tried to enter the business at about 4:30 a.m. but failed to gain access and left without taking anything. Investigators said two pharmacies in Queens were targeted later that same day.
Authorities have not released the names of any suspects, and no arrests were reported in the latest available account. Police have described the people seen in surveillance footage as suspects in an ongoing investigation, and the allegations have not been tested in court.
The investigation remains active as detectives work to identify the people shown in surveillance footage and determine their roles in the eight incidents. Police say the group has been associated with a gray SUV used as a getaway vehicle.
