Two armed individuals returned fire after the man came back to the store with a shotgun, according to Riverton officials.
RIVERTON, UT — A man who returned to a Riverton convenience store with a shotgun and fired the weapon died Friday after two armed individuals at the business returned fire, city officials said. No other injuries were reported.
The shooting happened at the Chevron Holiday gas station at 12600 S. 4185 West. Riverton public information officer Nate Slack said police were not involved in the gunfire and that the two people who confronted the man were not affiliated with each other.
According to Slack, the incident began when the man entered the store and tried to purchase alcohol. The clerk refused the sale because the man did not have identification, Slack said. The man then became argumentative, and two people inside the store attempted to calm the situation.
The man eventually left the business and got into his vehicle, according to the city’s account. Slack said the man drove around before returning to the gas station with a shotgun.
Slack said the man fired the shotgun after returning, prompting the two armed individuals to return fire. Officials had not determined whether the man’s shotgun blast was directed at anyone. Police said his shot did not strike another person.
After he was wounded, the man left the store and collapsed outside, where he died from his injuries, Slack said. His identity had not been released as officials worked to confirm who he was.
The two people who fired at the man remained at the scene and were cooperating with investigators, according to Slack. Authorities had not announced whether either person would face charges, and no additional details about the investigation were immediately released.
Officials said no employees, customers or responding officers were injured. Police continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting Friday evening, including the sequence of gunfire inside the store.
Slack said authorities believed there was no continuing threat to the community. The investigation remained active as officials worked to identify the man and review what happened before and during the shooting.
