Authorities are investigating after two adults and a child were discovered inside a burning two-story residence early Saturday.
MAYWOOD, CA — Three people, including a child, were found dead inside a Maywood home early Saturday after firefighters responded to a blaze in the 5000 block of East 61st Street, authorities said.
Los Angeles County firefighters were called to the residence at about 2:25 a.m. Sept. 5 and saw smoke coming from the two-story home when they arrived. Emergency crews entered the building and located three people who were deceased, according to information released by authorities. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the victims were two adults and one child. Their identities had not been publicly released Saturday morning.
Authorities had not immediately determined whether the three victims died as a result of the fire or before it began. The circumstances surrounding the deaths remained under investigation, and officials had not released confirmed causes of death. Those determinations were expected to depend on the continuing investigation and examinations of the victims.
A handgun was found in the room where the three people were located, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Officials did not initially release additional information explaining how the firearm might be connected to the deaths. Authorities also had not publicly identified the adults or disclosed the age or identity of the child in the early stages of the investigation.
Investigators said the fire began on the first floor of the residence. The cause of the blaze had not been announced, and officials had not provided details about what investigators found at the suspected point of origin. The available information also did not establish what happened inside the home before firefighters were called.
The discovery brought sheriff’s investigators to the scene alongside fire personnel as authorities worked to determine both how the fire started and how the three people died. Video from the area showed firefighters and deputies remaining near the residence while investigators worked at the property and spoke with people nearby.
Fire crews and sheriff’s deputies were still at the scene early Saturday morning. Authorities had not announced the victims’ identities or released final findings on the cause of the fire or the deaths as the investigation continued.
