Police are investigating whether a vehicle struck the victim after an ambulance crew discovered the person in the roadway early Sunday.
HOUSTON, TX — Houston police are investigating a possible hit-and-run after an ambulance crew found a person dead in a southwest Houston roadway early Sunday, authorities said. The victim was discovered near 11450 Bissonnet Street at about 1:47 a.m.
The Houston Fire Department ambulance crew was traveling through the area when it encountered the person in the roadway, according to information released by the Houston Police Department. The victim had serious head injuries and appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. Authorities had not publicly identified the victim as of Sunday.
The circumstances surrounding the death remained under investigation. Police had not confirmed what type of vehicle may have struck the person or established the sequence of events leading to the victim being found on Bissonnet Street. No confirmed description of a suspected vehicle was immediately available.
A person later returned to the scene and told investigators that they believed they might have struck the victim, police said. Investigators had not confirmed whether that person or the person’s vehicle was involved in the fatal incident. Police said the person did not show apparent signs of impairment.
The person’s decision to return gives investigators another element to examine as they work to determine what happened. Police did not immediately release additional information about that individual, including what led the person to believe they may have struck someone. Authorities also had not announced any arrest or charge connected with the death.
The investigation comes amid other recent fatal pedestrian crashes in Houston. Earlier in September, Houston police opened a separate hit-and-run investigation after a 46-year-old woman was found near the intersection of Wilcrest Drive and Bissonnet Street. Authorities said injuries discovered during her medical treatment were consistent with a crash. Police had no information about the striking vehicle when they announced that investigation.
Another pedestrian was killed in southwest Houston earlier this month near Corporate Drive and Beechnut Street. In that case, police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities reported no apparent signs of impairment involving that driver. The incidents are separate, and police have not indicated that they are connected.
In Sunday’s Bissonnet Street case, several important details remained unknown, including the victim’s identity and whether investigators had definitively determined that a vehicle caused the fatal injuries. Police also had not publicly confirmed whether evidence from the scene had established which vehicle, if any, struck the victim.
The Houston Police Department’s investigation remained ongoing Sunday. Authorities had not announced an arrest or identified a confirmed driver in connection with the death as investigators continued working to determine how the victim was fatally injured.
