Three dead, eight injured in homecoming shooting

LEXINGTON, MS – A gathering meant to celebrate a significant homecoming win ended in heartbreak and chaos in Holmes County, Mississippi. During the early moments of Saturday morning, gunfire erupted at a local trail packed with hundreds of revelers, resulting in three deaths and eight injuries.

The gathering followed a spirited victory by the Holmes County Consolidated Schools’ football team. Sheriff Willie March described the scene as pure chaos, as two individuals opened fire into the crowd, igniting panic and a rush for safety among the 200 to 300 people present.

Witnesses recall a fight preceding the gunshots, but deputies have yet to pinpoint the catalyst for the clash. Authorities are focusing on tracking those responsible, with efforts underway to collect ammunition and other evidence to discern how many firearms discharged during the incident.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has joined local authorities in the search for suspects. Sheriff March shared his bewilderment over the origins of the violence, emphasizing the perplexing nature of such conflicts that don’t appear to stem from drugs or territorial disputes.

Fallen victims of the attack include Martel Gibson, 25, Shundra Chestnut, 19, and John Jenkins, 19. The community is left mourning these devastating losses and seeking closure in the aftermath.

Questions abound among residents regarding the young men involved and their apparent inclination to carry weapons. The sheriff voiced concern over this tendency and the ongoing sense of threat it poses to community safety.

Meanwhile, Lexington locals, about 70 miles north of Jackson, are rallying to provide support and cooperate with law enforcement in their efforts to capture the perpetrators.

As the investigation continues, residents hope for speedy justice and meaningful actions to foster a safer environment for all.
