First responders treat 17 middle schoolers for drug exposure

LOS ANGELES, CA – In a troubling event on Thursday, a group of students at Walter Reed Middle School in Studio City fell ill after reportedly consuming gummy bears, prompting an immediate emergency response.

The school’s nurse, noticing unusual symptoms among several students, dialed 911 at approximately 10:30 a.m. Los Angeles Fire Department Captain Erik Scott stated that 17 students were treated onsite for their conditions.

Fortunately, none of the students faced life-threatening conditions, although two required hospitalization for thorough evaluation. Notably, preliminary investigations found no direct evidence of fentanyl or similar drugs, but the contents of the gummy bears remain under scrutiny.

Capt. Scott reported symptoms among students that included fatigue, a heightened heart rate, and anxiety-like feelings. The incident has led the school’s leadership to ensure all affected families are kept informed.

Principal Paul De Bonis reassured families by confirming that emergency services were promptly engaged and students received immediate care. He noted that authorities from the Los Angeles School Police Department are leading an intensive investigation.
