SUGAR LAND, TX – A trio of suspects is in custody following a daring smash-and-grab robbery at a Sugar Land jewelry store on Saturday afternoon. The incident unfolded at the bustling First Colony Mall, situated near the Southwest Freeway and Highway Six, causing chaos and raising new concerns about security in the area.
Witnesses described a frantic scene at Daniel’s Jewelers just before 2 p.m., where the suspects used a window punch to shatter multiple glass display cases. The perpetrators, identified by police as Austin Greer, Ters Andro James Baines, and Jada Stewart, then fled the scene in a getaway car. Thanks to a vigilant bystander who provided a detailed description of the vehicle, authorities quickly located the car near Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.
The brazenness of the midday heist, particularly on a busy Saturday, has sparked discussions about the audacity of such crimes. “It speaks volumes about the lack of fear among these perpetrators,” remarked a local resident.
Sugar Land police have charged all three suspects with aggravated robbery. Court records reveal that Austin Greer has a history of similar offenses. In 2008, he was convicted of aggravated robbery and served six years in state prison. Additionally, Greer faces charges from a 2015 incident involving aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and has been out on multiple bonds in both Harris and Fort Bend counties.
The repeated offenses and bond forfeitures by Greer have raised alarms among community safety advocates. Andy Kahan of Houston Crime Stoppers expressed concern, noting, “The fact that he’s been wanted for over a year underscores a troubling trend. How many other defendants are out there, evading justice after forfeiting bond?”
Amid the chaos, only one person was injured—a bystander who fell while trying to escape the commotion. Sugar Land police continue to investigate the incident, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
