Teen girl facing grand jury charges for brutal assault of classmate

HONOLULU, HI – A mother and daughter have been arrested following the circulation of a viral video earlier this year that captured a bullying incident. Authorities have charged 18-year-old Jasmine, her mother, and six other juveniles with various criminal offenses.

During a court hearing, prosecutors presented details of the video that sparked widespread outrage. It depicted a teenager assaulting a seemingly defenseless woman while bystanders recorded the event. Investigators revealed that the conflict between Kayla and the victim began before the video was filmed. According to court documents, Kayla allegedly stole a gift card from the victim in early March and later destroyed her school project.

The two individuals reportedly rode the same bus, which formed the basis of their acquaintance. Kayla is accused of having taken the school project from the victim, who had invested $15 and five hours into its creation, forcing her to redo the work.

On April 17, prosecutors allege that Kayla attempted to steal items from the victim’s backpack. She then followed the victim off the bus and assaulted her while others filmed the incident. Kayla allegedly removed the victim’s glasses and struck her multiple times in the head and face, causing significant pain. The victim did not retaliate and was reportedly left unconscious from the beating.

The judge described Kayla as a danger to the community and set her bail at $45,000, stating that this amount is necessary to ensure the safety of the victim and the public, as well as to guarantee Kayla’s appearance at future court dates.

Kayla’s mother, An Aliviar, faces charges of attempted theft and extortion. Police have also charged six juveniles in connection with the incident. In late May, Kayla expressed regret, stating she felt pressured into fighting the victim and apologized for her actions.

A spokesperson for the victim released a statement expressing relief over the charges, acknowledging that while the pain and trauma cannot be undone, the legal action represents a crucial step forward.
