Four Arrested After Violent Home Invasion

Police said two victims survived after armed intruders forced their way into a home near Arizona Avenue and Elliot Road.

CHANDLER, AZ — Four people were arrested after a violent home invasion early Saturday near Arizona Avenue and Elliot Road left an elderly man injured and his disabled adult daughter shot, Chandler police and court records said.

The arrests followed a weekend investigation that stretched from a Chandler neighborhood to the Arizona-Mexico border. Police said the attack began as a burglary call around 6 a.m. Saturday and became a wider case involving an earlier robbery, a stolen Mercedes sedan, surveillance video, cell phone records and several suspects. At least one suspect remained sought as of the latest public update.

Officers were first called to a home near Arizona Avenue and Elliot Road after reports of a burglary. Inside, they found two injured people. One victim had been assaulted, and another had been shot. Both were taken to hospitals with injuries that police said were not expected to be fatal. The homeowner later told ABC15 that he and his family were taking the recovery “one day at a time” as his 38-year-old daughter prepared to leave the hospital after surgery on her arm.

Court paperwork said the elderly homeowner told investigators that at least two unknown men forced their way into his bedroom through French doors and struck him in the head with a gun. The suspects demanded keys to his vehicle, police said. The man’s daughter, who authorities said has special needs because of a traumatic brain injury, was shot twice in the arm. Police said the suspects stole the homeowner’s Mercedes sedan before leaving the area.

Investigators said surveillance video helped show the path of the suspects before and during the break-in. Video from outside the home showed three suspects walking through an alley before entering the house, according to court records. Police also recovered video from inside the home, which showed three suspects inside and one of them shooting the woman. Investigators said the suspects then ran toward a rear window, and one fired toward the window while trying to escape.

Police said evidence found inside the home included two empty rifle casings, a broken window and blood on shattered glass. Two more empty casings were found near the broken rear window. A source with firsthand knowledge of the case told FOX 10 Phoenix that the elderly man suffered a fractured skull and severe cuts after being pistol-whipped and beaten. The source said a third person inside the home hid from the intruders and called 911. Police have not publicly released a motive.

Court documents said the home invasion was linked to another violent incident that happened about 20 minutes earlier. An Uber driver told police that five men with tattoos tried to get into his sedan, but he said he could not fit all of them. The driver told investigators an argument followed, and he was hit in the head with a firearm. Police said one suspect held the driver at gunpoint while another stole items, including a watch and cell phone. The driver was hospitalized with a head injury.

Investigators said they used Uber records to identify an account holder tied to the earlier ride. Police went to that person’s Chandler home, where Jesus Nunez, 18, was identified as one of the suspects, court records said. Investigators then used more Uber information, cell phone records and vehicle evidence to follow the case. The stolen Mercedes was later found in Phoenix about a block from a requested drop-off location, police said. The car had damage and its license plate had been removed.

Authorities tracked Nunez south toward the border Sunday evening, records said. Police said Nunez, an underage suspect and three adults were found in a vehicle in the Nogales area as they were headed toward Mexico. Nunez and the juvenile suspect were taken into custody in connection with the Chandler break-in, police said. Three adults in the vehicle were arrested for hindering the investigation. Chandler police later said two other adults also were taken into custody for crimes related to the incident.

Nunez was booked on charges of armed robbery, theft of means of transportation, burglary, aggravated assault and aggravated robbery, according to court records cited by local reports. He was being held on a $250,000 bond. Police have not released the names of the juvenile suspects. It was not immediately clear whether the other adults arrested had been formally charged in court or whether they had attorneys who could speak on their behalf.

The attack shocked residents in the area near Arizona Avenue and Elliot Road, where police worked an active scene after the Saturday morning call. FOX 10 Phoenix reported that the victims told officers they did not know why their home was targeted. Chandler police officer Marysol Green said the investigation remained active as detectives continued to gather evidence and search for other people believed to be involved.

The elderly homeowner told ABC15 his daughter had surgery and would need physical therapy after being shot in both arms. Police said both victims were expected to survive. Investigators continued searching for an additional suspect after the border-area arrests, while the criminal case against Nunez moved forward in Maricopa County.
