YONKERS, NY – A quiet neighborhood in Yonkers was shaken early Tuesday morning when an apparent murder-suicide took place at the home of a retired NYPD detective. Sean O’Neill, 55, reportedly shot his wife, Arlene O’Neill, a 47-year-old schoolteacher, multiple times before turning the gun on himself. Both were found dead in their residence.
The tragedy unfolded as the couple’s three children were inside the house. One of the children made the heart-wrenching call to 911 around 7 a.m., summoning police to the scene on Chittenden Avenue. Officers arrived promptly and attempted to save Arlene O’Neill, but she succumbed to her injuries.
Neighbors expressed disbelief over the violent incident on their usually peaceful, tree-lined street. “It’s shocking and deeply sad,” one resident commented, reflecting the community’s sense of loss and confusion.
Arlene O’Neill was a beloved fifth-grade teacher at Anne Hutchinson School in the Eastchester School District, where she taught for two decades. Her dedication to her students and passion for teaching were well-known among colleagues and students alike.
Sean O’Neill retired last year after a distinguished 30-year career with the NYPD, where he last served on the Joint Terrorism Task Force. The circumstances leading to the tragic event remain under investigation as authorities seek to understand the motive behind the act.
In response to the heartbreaking news, the Eastchester School District has activated its crisis team to support students, faculty, and staff. Additional resources from neighboring districts have been mobilized to provide emotional assistance.
The O’Neill children, though physically unharmed, now face the daunting task of coping with the loss of both parents. Community members have come together to offer support and comfort during this difficult time.
As Yonkers Police continue their investigation, the community grapples with the impact of this devastating event, seeking solace and answers in the wake of an unthinkable tragedy.
