Investigators are determining whether the critically wounded man shot himself or was shot by another person inside the home.
HOUSTON, TX — A 90-year-old man fatally shot a healthcare aide at a southeast Houston home before suffering a critical gunshot wound himself during a second shooting in the garage, police said.
Houston police were called to the 11500 block of Panay Drive at about 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28. Investigators said four people were inside the home: an 87-year-old woman who lived there, her healthcare aide, a 90-year-old man who was visiting the resident and another man who was connected to the aide. Police have not publicly identified those involved.
Investigators said their initial information indicates the 90-year-old visitor shot the healthcare aide, a woman believed to be in her 40s. She died at the scene. Police have not announced what led to the shooting or released a possible motive.
After the first shooting, police said, the 90-year-old man went into the garage. The other man followed him, and another gunshot was heard. Officers later found the older man with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and was not expected to survive, according to police information reported from the scene.
Detectives were still working to establish what happened inside the garage. Police said they had not determined whether the 90-year-old man shot himself or whether the other man shot him. That man was detained and taken for questioning as investigators worked to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Police initially responded to information suggesting a possible suicide was in progress. As investigators gathered evidence and interviewed those connected to the home, authorities said the circumstances appeared more complicated than the initial call indicated.
The 87-year-old resident was described by police as a friend of the 90-year-old man. The woman who was killed worked as the resident’s healthcare aide. Authorities did not report that the resident was physically injured during the shootings.
Police had not announced any criminal charges as of early Tuesday. Investigators also had not released the identities of the healthcare aide, the wounded 90-year-old man, the resident or the other man who was questioned.
The Houston Police Department’s investigation remains ongoing as detectives seek to determine who fired the second gunshot and what led to the initial shooting. Authorities said additional details would depend on evidence and witness information gathered during the investigation.
