IONE, CA – A quiet community in the Sierra Nevada foothills was rocked by a horrifying stabbing spree on Monday. One woman was killed and two others were injured in the attacks, which authorities believe were carried out by a man on parole for attempted murder.
The stabbings took place in three separate locations within the small city of Ione, according to Police Chief John Alfred’s Tuesday briefing. Ione, nestled in the foothills of Amador County, southeast of Sacramento, is a community unaccustomed to such violent incidents.
The victims, each suffering multiple stab wounds, appeared to have no relation to each other, suggesting that the attacks were random. A knife, believed to be the weapon used in the attacks, was recovered at one of the crime scenes.
The suspect, a 34-year-old man whose name has not been released, was apprehended on the street where two of the attacks occurred. He is currently being held without bail.
Details regarding potential charges against the suspect or his legal representation are yet to be disclosed. The suspect was released from prison earlier this year and spent time in Atascadero State Hospital, a secure psychiatric facility, before moving to Ione in July.
The deceased victim was identified by her family as Lori Louise Owens, 63. The other victims, a man in his 20s and a Pacific Gas & Electric employee are recovering from their injuries.
