ASHEVILLE, N.C. – As the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene continues to unfold across Southern states, relief efforts are ramping up to provide aid and assistance to those affected. The North Carolina National Guard (NCNG) has mobilized over 500 soldiers and airmen, deploying more than 200 vehicles and aircraft, including hoist and emergency aviation assets, as well as high-water response vehicles.
By Sunday morning, the NCNG had completed 16 air missions, rescuing 119 residents and 11 pets. The largest single mission saw the rescue of 41 people north of Asheville in Buncombe County. The NCNG has also transported over 34,000 pounds of cargo, including essential supplies like food, water, and medical provisions, with additional support from personnel and air assets from several states, including Connecticut, Maryland, Ohio, Iowa, Florida, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
In a crucial update, the Black Mountain Police Department confirmed that the Bee Tree Dam was inspected and found to be safe following an earlier evacuation notice due to concerns about its stability. The Asheville Fire Department also verified that the dam was functioning as designed, with no need for further evacuations.
Governor Roy Cooper, during a morning briefing, expressed gratitude for the tireless efforts of first responders. He emphasized the need for an unprecedented response to match the scale of the disaster, highlighting the state’s resilience and the bravery of those risking their lives to aid others.
In Erie, Pennsylvania, former President Trump extended thoughts and prayers to those suffering from the hurricane’s aftermath, particularly in North Carolina. Meanwhile, community support in Asheville has been palpable, with local businesses like Balm Salon seeking assistance to rebuild after being completely destroyed by the flooding.
On a federal level, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra declared a public health emergency for North Carolina, enabling greater flexibility for healthcare providers in addressing the crisis. This declaration follows President Biden’s emergency declarations for several states, including North Carolina.
Country music stars Luke Combs and Chase Rice have also pledged support, with Combs hinting at a special initiative to aid the Carolinas. As the region grapples with the hurricane’s destruction, the combined efforts of local, state, and federal entities, along with community and celebrity support, are crucial in the ongoing recovery process.
