Police surrounded a nearby home and closed part of Main Street as investigators worked to determine what led to the shooting.
AVONDALE, AZ — A man died after he was found with multiple gunshot wounds early Friday in Avondale, prompting a large police response that included a SWAT team and Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers.
Avondale police responded shortly before 4:30 a.m. Sept. 18 to reports of a shooting near Main Street and 4th Street. Officers found the wounded man and had him taken to a hospital, where he later died. Authorities had not publicly identified him in the initial reports.
The shooting led officers to focus their investigation on a nearby home. News crews at the scene reported seeing Avondale police officers, members of the department’s SWAT team and state troopers in the area. Armed officers surrounded the residence while other law enforcement personnel staged nearby.
Police did not immediately say what led to the shooting or disclose whether investigators had identified a suspect. Authorities also had not announced whether anyone had been arrested or taken into custody in connection with the man’s death.
The investigation caused a significant road closure in the Old Town Avondale area. Main Street was closed in both directions between 4th and 7th streets as detectives and other officers worked at the scene. Authorities initially said the closure was expected to continue for several hours.
Reports from the scene showed numerous police vehicles and officers positioned around the neighborhood. The presence of the SWAT team indicated that specialized officers had been brought into the response, but police did not immediately release details explaining the circumstances that led to the team’s deployment.
Authorities released few details about the shooting during the first hours of the investigation. The victim’s identity, the circumstances before the gunfire and any possible connection between the victim and other people at the scene had not been made public.
Police continued investigating the fatal shooting Friday while seeking information from the public. No later official announcement identifying a suspect, confirming an arrest or explaining a possible motive was available in the reports reviewed for this update.
