ATTLEBORO, MA – An early morning domestic dispute between two brothers took place in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Their violent altercation ended in a deadly scene, with one brother fatally stabbing the other. Richard McCormick, 47, of North Attleboro, was pronounced dead after he succumbed to multiple stab injuries.
Attleboro police responded to a distress call around 3:25 a.m. on Monday from 5 Melissa Drive. When first responders arrived at the scene of the stabbing, they found Richard critically wounded outside the residence. He was rushed to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, but medical efforts to save him proved futile.
The victim’s brother, 51-year-old James McCormick of Attleboro, has been detained. While in custody, the stabbing suspect is currently facing charges of assault with intent to murder and assault and battery.
Residents of the generally peaceful Melissa Drive area reacted with shock and disbelief to the tragic event. Kristine Erickson, a neighbor to the brothers involved in the crime, described the neighborhood as typically quiet and free from trouble. Another nearby resident, Debra Skorker, said the tight-knit community was close and friendly, making the incident particularly jarring.
James McCormick is set to appear for his arraignment in Attleboro District Court on Tuesday.
