Man set on fire in Times Square

NEW YORK, NY – Authorities in New York City are investigating a shocking incident in Times Square where a man was set ablaze in the early hours of Sunday morning. The New York Police Department has revealed that the victim and the suspect are believed to be acquainted, though the motive for the attack remains unclear.

Witnesses at the scene, located at the bustling intersection of 41st Street and 7th Avenue, reported seeing a suspect in blue clothing douse the 45-year-old victim with a flammable liquid before igniting it. The incident took place at approximately 3:53 a.m., according to police reports.

A street vendor, who has been offering tours in the area for eight years, expressed disbelief at the violence. “I’ve been here every day, and this is just tragic,” he said, noting that the section of Times Square had been cordoned off by authorities since his shift began at 7 a.m.

Police officers patrolling the area were quick to respond, using a fire extinguisher from their vehicle to put out the flames engulfing the victim. Emergency medical services and firefighters soon arrived, rushing the man to the hospital. He was treated for burns on his face and arms but is expected to recover.

The attack has drawn parallels to a previous incident in December 2022, where a 57-year-old woman was set on fire and killed while asleep on a subway train in Coney Island. The suspect in that case, a 33-year-old man, was charged with murder and arson.

Investigators are actively seeking leads to apprehend the suspect involved in Sunday’s attack. By afternoon, they were combing the area for evidence, hoping to piece together clues that might lead to an arrest.

A tourist from the Midwest, who witnessed the aftermath, expressed shock at the violence. “If I were visiting, I’d be running the other way,” she said, underscoring the fear such incidents instill in both locals and visitors.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the attack to contact Crime Stoppers. Tips can be provided anonymously by calling 1-800-577-TIPS.

This incident underscores the unpredictable nature of urban crime and the importance of vigilance in crowded public spaces.
