Man arrested after stabbing victim to death during carjacking

WEST CHESTER, PA – A quiet community in Chester County is grappling with the aftermath of a shocking crime spree that culminated in the tragic death of a local resident. Authorities have charged 33-year-old Javier Rivera of Kennett Square with murder after a series of events that began with an attempted car theft.

According to the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, the incident started around 8:15 p.m. Sunday in Kennett Township. Rivera allegedly attempted to steal a BMW from a driveway on Crestline Drive. The car’s owner, 69-year-old Charles Marsden, confronted Rivera, leading to a fatal altercation where Marsden was stabbed to death.

The violence left the community in disbelief. “It’s alarming, astounding, and shocking,” said a neighbor. The crime has rattled the sense of safety in the usually peaceful area.

Following the attack, Rivera reportedly stole a burgundy Honda Accord nearby. He then allegedly crashed into a gray Honda Accord on North Union Street, further escalating the chaos. Detectives say Rivera fled the scene, leaving another victim in distress.

The spree didn’t end there. Rivera is accused of breaking into a home on South New Street in West Chester. The resident’s screams apparently prompted him to flee, continuing his trail of disturbance.

Back in Kennett Square, police responded to a report on Clover Lane and discovered the vehicle from the crash. They also found that a gray Honda SUV had been stolen from a garage, adding another layer to the unfolding drama.

Residents expressed their unease. “It’s a scary thing. This is a pretty peaceful area,” one local commented, reflecting the community’s shock.

Law enforcement managed to locate Rivera within hours at his Kennett Square residence, where they also found the stolen SUV. He was taken into custody early Monday morning and is currently held without bail. His preliminary hearing is set for August 20.
