AUSTIN, TX – The vibrant city of Austin was shaken by a tragic event when a shooting outside a Target store left three people dead. Authorities have identified the suspect and are piecing together the chain of events that led to this devastating incident.
The suspect, 32-year-old Ethan Nineker, faces three murder charges following the Monday afternoon shooting. The victims include 24-year-old Target employee Hector Machuka, who was shot while collecting shopping carts, along with 65-year-old Adam Chow and his four-year-old granddaughter, Astrid. Chow’s wife was also injured in the attack but survived.
The attack, described by police as unprovoked and deliberate, triggered a chaotic sequence involving multiple carjackings and crashes. Nineker allegedly stole the Chows’ car and others, leading to a destructive spree captured on camera, showing a damaged white Volkswagen speeding down a street.
Authorities eventually apprehended Nineker, who was found naked in a residential backyard. A taser was used to subdue him. Officials revealed that Nineker has a history marked by violent crime and mental health struggles, raising questions about systemic failures in addressing his issues.
The Chow family is now mourning the loss of Adam, remembered as the family’s heart and backbone, and Astrid, cherished for her joyful spirit. The suspect’s criminal history should have prevented him from acquiring a firearm, but police report that he obtained the gun used in the shooting from a family member. It remains unclear if charges will be brought against that individual.
This tragic event has left the Austin community grappling with grief and searching for answers. As investigations continue, the focus remains on understanding how such a tragedy could have been prevented.
