Man armed with knife killed in officer-involved shooting

PHOENIX, AZ – In the early hours of the morning, an officer-involved shooting unfolded on the south side of Phoenix, leaving one man dead. The incident occurred just outside a memorial park, which remains an active investigation scene.

At around 1 a.m., a patrol unit with two officers noticed a man on a bicycle. Upon attempting to engage with him, the man abandoned his bike and fled on foot. The officers pursued him, leading to a confrontation near the park.

During the struggle, one officer observed the man wielding a knife. This prompted the other officer to respond with gunfire. The man was treated at the scene before being transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

This marks the second officer-involved shooting in Phoenix this month and the seventh in 2025, a decrease from previous years. The Department of Public Safety is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances and motivations behind the incident.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the altercation. The area around the park remains closed, affecting local residents who are urged to find alternative routes.

The Phoenix Police Department and DPS investigators are working diligently to piece together the series of events that led to the tragic outcome. They aim to provide clarity and transparency to the community.
