Deputies said an alleged robbery attempt inside a vehicle led to gunfire near a Valero station.
HOUSTON, TX — A man was critically injured Tuesday after deputies said a social media content meetup turned into an alleged robbery attempt and shooting near Bammel North Houston Road and Kleinbrook Drive in northwest Harris County.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the two men had recently met and were together in the driver’s vehicle after planning to make social media content. Investigators said both men were armed. The passenger was taken to a hospital in critical condition, while the driver was also hospitalized but was not believed to have been shot.
The shooting was reported about 11:09 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection, close to a Valero gas station in the Champions Point area. Harris County Sheriff’s Office Major Ben Katrib said a 911 caller told dispatchers he had shot a man who tried to rob him. “We received multiple calls for service about the incident,” Katrib said during a briefing. Deputies said the driver had stopped near the location when the passenger allegedly pulled out a gun. Investigators said a brief struggle followed before the driver drew his own weapon and shot the passenger.
Authorities said the passenger got out of the vehicle after being shot and ran before collapsing in the roadway. Deputies and emergency medical crews responded to the scene, and the passenger was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The driver was also transported for treatment, though officials said his injuries did not appear to be from gunfire. The names of both men were not released Tuesday. Katrib said they were believed to be in their early to mid-20s and had met in connection with producing online content. Investigators did not say what platform they used, what kind of content they planned to make or how long they had known each other.
The shooting brought deputies to a busy stretch of northwest Harris County near businesses, gas stations and neighborhood traffic. Patrol District 6 officials responded to the intersection, and northbound lanes of Bammel North Houston Road were closed while deputies examined the scene. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the man accused in the robbery attempt was critically injured. Officials said there was no continuing threat to the public. Investigators were still working to confirm the order of events, including where the guns were inside the vehicle before the confrontation and whether any video or social media records captured moments before the shooting.
No charges had been announced as of the latest official update. The sheriff’s office described the case as an active investigation and said the early account came from the driver and evidence gathered at the scene. Deputies were expected to review 911 calls, interview the driver and any witnesses, check nearby surveillance cameras and examine the vehicle. Officials did not say whether the case would be referred to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for a charging decision. The passenger’s medical condition was expected to be a key part of the next update.
The incident drew attention because deputies said it began as a planned meeting between people who create content online, not as a random encounter. Katrib said the two men were “recently acquainted” and were traveling together when the alleged robbery attempt happened. The sheriff’s office did not release the men’s social media names, follower counts or any details about their online work. Officials also did not say whether the meeting was for a paid project, a collaboration or a casual video shoot. The central facts still under review were the alleged threat, the struggle and the driver’s decision to fire.
The case remained open Wednesday, with the passenger hospitalized in critical condition and the driver’s role still under review. The next major step is expected to be an update from investigators or a charging decision after evidence and witness statements are reviewed.
