MOBILE, AL – A Mobile County Metro Jail corrections officer has been arrested and charged with first-degree sexual assault, following allegations that surfaced during an inmate’s hospital visit. The officer, 39-year-old Timothy Scarborough, was responsible for guarding an inmate who was undergoing eye surgery.
According to Sheriff Burch, the incident occurred while the inmate was under anesthesia. When the inmate regained consciousness, he reported that Scarborough was sexually assaulting him. Scarborough, who had been with the corrections department since November, was immediately placed under investigation.
The inmate, who was at the hospital for a medical procedure, was initially detained for a probation violation related to domestic violence charges. The allegations against Scarborough have led to his termination from the corrections department and his subsequent arrest.
Sheriff Burch emphasized the severity of the charges, noting that the department has zero tolerance for such behavior. “We hold our officers to the highest standards of conduct,” Burch stated. “Any deviation from these standards is met with swift and decisive action.”
Scarborough’s bond hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning. The case has drawn significant attention, raising concerns about the oversight and conduct of corrections officers.
As the investigation continues, the department is reviewing its protocols to ensure the safety and security of inmates, especially during medical visits. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the treatment of inmates and the accountability of law enforcement personnel.
