DeKalb County police said the shooting may be connected to a fight or disagreement that happened earlier Sunday.
STONE MOUNTAIN, GA — Two boys, ages 11 and 12, were killed and two women were injured Sunday in a shooting at an apartment complex in DeKalb County, authorities said.
Officers responded Sept. 20 to reports that several people had been shot at 1075 North Hairston Road, an address associated with the Nissan Golden Gate apartment community near Stone Mountain, according to the DeKalb County Police Department. Investigators said their preliminary findings indicate the gunfire may be connected to a fight or disagreement that occurred earlier in the day, but police have not released details about that dispute.
Responding officers found an 11-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound. He died at the scene, police said. A 12-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries. Authorities had not publicly released the boys’ names as of early Monday.
Two women, ages 19 and 39, were also injured in the shooting and taken to a local hospital. Police said both women were in stable condition. Authorities have not said whether the four people who were shot were related or explained how they were connected to one another.
Police have not publicly identified a suspect or announced an arrest. Detectives are working to establish what happened before the shooting, who was involved in the earlier disagreement and what led to the gunfire. Authorities also have not released information about how many people may have fired weapons.
A DeKalb County police spokesperson said the shooting may have been connected to an earlier fight, but investigators had not provided further details about the confrontation. Police also said the incident was not considered an active-shooter situation and that nearby residents were not believed to be in continuing danger.
The Police Department described the deaths as an “unimaginable loss” for the families and the community and offered condolences to those affected. The statement did not identify the victims or provide additional information about possible suspects.
The shooting occurred in the 1000 block of North Hairston Road, north of Memorial Drive and just outside the city limits of Stone Mountain. The investigation remained active Monday, with detectives still trying to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
No arrests had been announced and the identities of the two boys had not been released as of the latest available police information. Authorities had also not disclosed a confirmed motive beyond the possible connection to the earlier fight or disagreement.
