CYPRESS, TX – A man in Cypress, Texas, has been taken into police custody after he fatally shot the male friend of his estranged wife. The accused, Kerry Cunningham, was noted to be too aggressive to be brought before a court on Tuesday. Subsequently, the bond hearing officer denied him bond, leaving the task to a district court judge who will decide on its terms.
The incident, which occurred on Monday night, claimed the life of 38-year-old Clifton Johnson. According to investigators, Johnson was visiting from Florida. Those who were familiar with him have described him as a gentle and kind-hearted individual on social media posts.
As per the court’s probable cause hearing, it is alleged that Cunningham forcefully barged into the home of his wife and confronted Johnson, who later breathed his last in a hospital due to the injuries he sustained from Cunningham’s gunshot.
The investigators report that Cunningham forcefully accessed his estranged wife’s home located at Alys Crossing Apartments on Cypress Plaza Parkway on Monday night. It’s reported that he kicked the door and leveraged a screwdriver to get in. Authorities shared that Cunningham’s wife had moved to these apartments to distance herself from him.
Cunningham was caught in possession of a gun by a camera positioned within the premises. Johnson, who was attempting to hide, was discovered by Cunningham, leading to a conflict and the fatal fire exchange.
Emergency responders came to the scene and found Cunningham aiding the victim. Cunningham now faces capital murder charges and is due to make his first court appearance on Wednesday morning.
