Police said an altercation involving three men led to gunfire near Northwest 47th Avenue and 183rd Street.
MIAMI GARDENS, FL — Police investigated three scenes Thursday after an altercation near Northwest 47th Avenue and 183rd Street led to gunfire, wounded one man and drew officers to an apartment complex, a CVS pharmacy and a Marathon gas station.
The shooting happened before 1 p.m. near the Garden Vista apartments, a busy area with shops and traffic along Northwest 183rd Street, also known as Miami Gardens Drive. Miami Gardens police said the case began with an alleged battery involving a man and his ex-girlfriend, then escalated when two other men became involved. At least one person was taken to a hospital. Detectives were still working to determine the full sequence of events and whether any charges would be filed.
Officers were seen at the CVS, the Marathon gas station and the Garden Vista apartment complex for several hours as crime scene tape blocked off parts of the area. Police said the first confrontation started when a male subject allegedly battered his ex-girlfriend and was confronted by her brother. During the altercation, a third man intervened. Police said the subject pulled out a gun and fired multiple rounds at the other two men. The third man also fired his gun, striking the subject, police said. Dayhant Cadiz, who works nearby, said the shots were loud and fast. “Boom, boom, boom, clicking the trigger multiple times,” Cadiz said.
Police said the wounded subject fled after the shooting and was later found at the CVS with a gunshot wound. Paramedics took him to a hospital with injuries that officials described as not life-threatening. Another man was taken to a different hospital as a precaution, according to police. Witnesses told reporters the gunfire appeared to begin behind the Garden Vista apartments, then the investigation spread to the nearby businesses after the injured man ran from the scene. Officers placed evidence markers on the ground and went door to door to speak with residents. Police had not released the names or ages of the people involved by Thursday evening.
The area around Northwest 47th Avenue and Northwest 183rd Street is a commercial and residential corridor in Miami Gardens, with apartment buildings, gas stations, stores and heavy afternoon traffic. The response briefly turned routine business stops into part of a police investigation. Witnesses said people in the area moved away from the gunfire and watched officers secure the pharmacy, the gas station and the apartment complex. Cadiz, an employee at an Advance Auto Parts store near the scene, said the shots sounded heavier than a handgun. “I heard gunshots. It sounded like gunshots, an explosion, boom,” he said. “It was a heavy caliber, not a pistol.”
Investigators had not announced any arrests or formal charges Thursday evening. Police also had not said whether they recovered one or more guns, how many shots were fired or whether the alleged battery victim was injured. The case remained active as detectives reviewed the three locations, gathered witness statements and tried to confirm the role of each person involved. The subject who was shot was expected to survive, officials said. The other man taken to a hospital was transported as a precaution, and no other injuries were immediately reported.
The shooting drew attention because officers appeared to be working several scenes at once rather than one closed-off block. Crime scene tape surrounded portions of the CVS, Marathon station and apartment complex while police marked evidence and checked the ground near the buildings. Residents and workers watched from nearby businesses as officers moved between the locations. Several people said the shooting began at the apartment complex, but police had not confirmed every movement of the people involved. Officials said the third man’s gunfire struck the subject after the subject fired at the two men.
By Thursday evening, the investigation remained open and police had released only a limited account of the shooting. The next step is expected to include a review of witness statements, possible surveillance video and the medical status of the wounded subject.
