CHERRY HILL, NJ – A dramatic scene unfolded in Cherry Hill Monday as a man was taken into custody during a significant law enforcement operation. The incident prompted nearby schools to go on lockdown as authorities executed what they described as a “court-authorized law enforcement operation.” The FBI later confirmed there was no threat to the public.
The operation took place at a residence on a quiet street, where neighbors witnessed a heavy police and FBI presence. “All of a sudden, police everywhere and FBI everywhere,” said a resident who observed the activity starting mid-morning.
Authorities used a loudspeaker to instruct the occupants of the home to surrender. Shortly after, a loud bang and smoke were seen, followed by the man exiting the house with his hands raised. He was quickly handcuffed and placed into a law enforcement vehicle.
Local resident Bert Trama attempted to get a closer look but was instructed by officers to stay inside. “I’m thinking like, what the heck did this guy do?” Trama remarked, expressing shock over the arrest of his long-time neighbor.
The operation occurred near Horace Mann Elementary School, which was placed on lockdown as a precaution. Agents continued to search the home and surrounding vehicles throughout the afternoon, much to the unease of local residents.
“There were armored tanks and large SUVs everywhere,” one neighbor noted, describing the scene as a “big-time sting.”
The FBI has not released details about the suspect or potential charges, labeling the situation as “fluid.” Cherry Hill police assisted with the operation but directed all inquiries to the FBI.
