Woman Accused Of Shooting Father Four Times

Police said the victim survived but suffered potentially life-threatening injuries in the Jackson Lane shooting.

MIDDLETOWN, OH — A Middletown woman was arrested Friday after police said she shot her father four times during a fight inside a Jackson Lane apartment, leaving him seriously injured and sending investigators through the home for hours.

Police identified the suspect as Olivia Coleman, 32. Middletown Police Chief Earl Nelson said officers responded around 12:30 a.m. Friday and found two people in a physical altercation. After officers separated them, police said they discovered that the man had been shot multiple times. Coleman was taken into custody at the scene.

The shooting happened at the family’s apartment on Jackson Lane, where officers remained for hours while collecting evidence. Nelson said investigators were working carefully because they wanted to make sure they did not leave anything behind. The man was taken by ambulance to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown and later transferred to another hospital. “He’s alive,” Nelson said Friday morning, confirming that the victim survived the shooting. Police said the man’s injuries were potentially life-threatening.

Coleman was charged with felonious assault, police said. A separate local report, citing police, said she also was charged with assault on a police officer after an officer suffered minor injuries during the response. Coleman was held at the Middletown City Jail. Police had not released the father’s name as of Monday, and officials had not said whether the gun had been recovered, where inside the apartment the shooting occurred or who called police before officers arrived.

Investigators described the case as a domestic dispute, but Nelson said Friday that police did not yet know what led to the shooting. Neighbors told a local television station that Coleman had been involved in a separate fight the day before. One neighbor said three girls had fought earlier that evening and that the same woman was involved. Police did not announce whether that reported fight was connected to the shooting. Residents at the apartment complex said they were kept away from their homes for at least four hours while detectives worked at the scene.

The felonious assault charge places the case in Butler County’s criminal court process once formal filings move forward. Under Ohio law, felonious assault can involve knowingly causing serious physical harm or causing or attempting to cause physical harm with a deadly weapon. Police had not announced additional charges by Monday. Investigators also had not released details about Coleman’s first court appearance, bond status after booking or whether prosecutors would seek a grand jury review.

The early morning response brought patrol officers, medics and detectives to the residential area while neighbors waited outside the police perimeter. The scene remained active long after the victim was taken to the hospital. Nelson said the department’s focus was on evidence and the sequence of events before the shooting. Police said the case remained under investigation and asked people with information to contact Detective Terry Ballinger or the Middletown police dispatch center.

As of Monday, Coleman remained the only person publicly identified as arrested in the case. The father’s medical condition had not been updated beyond police statements that he survived after suffering potentially life-threatening injuries.
