SEBRING, FL – A deadly shooting broke out at an AdventHealth hospital in Sebring on Thursday morning. Deputies from the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating what appears to be a case of murder-suicide between a father and his son.
Authorities received reports of an active shooter situation around 11:26 a.m. at the hospital. According to the details that have been released so far, a 66-year-old man brought his adult son into the hospital who was displaying combative behavior. The son was subsequently placed in a designated mental health room in the emergency department of the facility.
The situation escalated when the father reportedly pulled out a gun. After taking out the weapon, he fired several shots into a wall in an apparent effort to clear the room. This was followed by him fatally shooting his son, who was resting on a bed.
The shooting ended with the father ultimately turning the weapon on himself and ending his own life. Both father and son were pronounced dead at the scene of the crime.
No other individuals were harmed during the course of the incident. In response to the shooting, the hospital was put on lockdown. Emergency medical services have been temporarily redirected to a different nearby facility.
