Father and son arrested after 10-year-old shoots another child with stolen gun

SACRAMENTO, CA – A shocking incident unfolded in California on Saturday as a father and his 10-year-old son were taken into custody. The arrest followed a horrifying event where the boy is believed to have used a stolen firearm to shoot another child, also aged 10.

The son reportedly stumbled upon the stolen weapon in his father’s car. Sacramento County police were called to a shooting scene, where they found a young boy gravely injured, with wounds to his head and neck, as per an official communication.

Onlookers at the scene directed the deputies to a nearby apartment, where the suspects had taken refuge. The deputies successfully evacuated and detained all the apartment’s occupants without any incident. An adult and two minors were among those detained.

The adult was identified as Arkete Davis, 53, and his son, whose name was withheld by the authorities, were subsequently arrested.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which took place on Greenholme Drive in California on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023.

Upon arrival, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators began their work, interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence. Their findings indicated that one of the detained minors, a 10-year-old boy, had retrieved cigarettes from his father’s car, during which he found a gun. The boy then allegedly shot the victim once and ran to a nearby apartment.

Investigators later found a firearm in a nearby trashcan, which they believe Davis attempted to discard. It was confirmed that Davis was legally barred from owning or possessing a firearm.

The young victim was transported to a hospital, where he was later declared dead.

Davis is now facing several felony firearm charges, as well as charges of child endangerment and being an accessory to a crime after the fact. His son, currently in a youth detention facility, is charged with murder.

Davis’s bail has been set at half a million dollars. The firearm used in the shooting had been reported stolen four years ago, in 2017.
