Woman dies after being shot in the chest

Deputies detained two people as detectives investigated the fatal shooting near Northwest 22nd Avenue and 90th Street.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL — A woman died after deputies found her shot in the chest Tuesday afternoon in the West Little River area of northwestern Miami-Dade County, authorities said.

The shooting drew a large law enforcement response to the area near Northwest 22nd Avenue and Northwest 90th Street, where deputies closed part of the road and marked off a crime scene. The woman was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, one of the region’s main trauma hospitals, but later died. Deputies detained a man and a woman as detectives worked to determine what led to the gunfire.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said the woman was bleeding shortly after 1:35 p.m. near the intersection. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews took her to Ryder Trauma Center, where doctors treated her for a chest wound. Authorities did not immediately release her name, age or hometown. Officials also did not say whether the two people detained were suspects, witnesses or people being questioned as part of the investigation.

Deputies closed Northwest 90th Street between Northwest 22nd and 21st avenues while investigators examined the scene. Crime scene tape stretched along the block, and marked and unmarked law enforcement vehicles blocked nearby traffic. Inside the taped area, an evidence marker sat on the ground near a resin plastic high-back chair. Residents said people in the area had complained about crime and had asked deputies to “shut the corner down.”

The shooting happened in West Little River, an unincorporated community northwest of Miami that includes homes, small businesses and busy neighborhood streets. The area is patrolled by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. Tuesday’s response placed deputies, crime scene personnel and fire rescue crews in a residential area during the afternoon, forcing drivers and residents to move around the blocked stretch of Northwest 90th Street.

Authorities did not immediately announce charges. Detectives were expected to review evidence from the scene, speak with people who were nearby and determine whether the detained man and woman had any role in the shooting. Investigators also had not publicly described a weapon, a motive or the relationship, if any, between the woman who died and the people detained.

The case remained active after the woman’s death at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Deputies had not said whether additional people were being sought. The blocked-off street, evidence marker and visible law enforcement presence showed investigators were still working through the scene after the shooting, while residents watched from nearby homes and businesses.

As of Thursday, April 30, officials had not released the woman’s identity or announced arrests. The next public step is expected to come from sheriff’s detectives or court records if charges are filed.
