Doctor accused of sexual misconduct

SARASOTA, FL – A local doctor, once trusted by many, now faces serious allegations after being accused of violating a patient’s trust and exploiting her vulnerability. Sarasota police have arrested Dr. Steven Fike, a former medical director at the Brainwave Center, on battery charges following a complaint from a former patient. Authorities are investigating the possibility of additional victims.

The Brainwave Center, located on U.S. 301 near downtown Sarasota, assists both adults and children dealing with mental health challenges. However, this institution has been thrust into the spotlight for unsettling reasons. The center’s sign was removed recently, reflecting the gravity of the accusations against its former director.

Dr. Fike has been held in county jail since Friday, charged with battery. The alleged victim, a 21-year-old woman, sought treatment for trauma and chronic pain. According to the arrest report, Dr. Fike purportedly told her that an intimate relationship and reenactments of past trauma were necessary components of her healing process. Disturbingly, at least 14 of these sessions reportedly occurred outside the center, including at his nearby apartment.

The case has raised serious concerns about the abuse of power and trust. Dr. Fike was terminated from his role at the Brainwave Center, which has expressed deep concern over the allegations, emphasizing their commitment to taking the matter seriously.

The president and CEO of the Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center commended the young woman for her bravery in coming forward and encouraged any other potential victims to do the same. “You’re supposed to be able to trust your medical providers,” she stated, highlighting the emotional turmoil such situations can cause.

Attorney Mark Zimmerman, representing Dr. Fike, pointed out that the doctor has practiced medicine for 40 years without any prior complaints. This case thus marks a significant turning point in what had been an unblemished career.

The unfolding investigation remains a priority for Sarasota police, who are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. Meanwhile, the community grapples with the implications of the case, reflecting on the importance of trust and accountability in healthcare.
