MAMARONECK, NY – A fatal accident claimed the lives of a mother and her kindergarten-age child near a school on Mamaroneck Avenue near New Street on Thursday morning. The duo was struck by a school bus around 8:30 a.m., resulting in their immediate hospitalization.
Law enforcement and first responder teams arriving on the scene found the 6-year-old and his 43-year-old mother grievously injured. The young boy was pronounced dead at the site of the accident, while his mother succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Preliminary investigations into the heart-wrenching incident indicate that it was an unfortunate accident. The school bus, driven by a 68-year-old man, had a green light and was making a left-hand turn from New Street onto Mamaroneck Avenue when it hit the mother-child duo who were utilizing the crosswalk. The driver is said to be cooperating with law enforcement, and there are currently no pending charges.
Superintendent Dr. Charles Sampson expressed his sorrow and condolences to the entire educational community in a letter, confirming that the victims were on their way to school when the unfortunate incident occurred. He affirmed the commitment of the school authority to provide necessary support to all affected parties.
The bus involved in the accident was en route to Mamaroneck Avenue School at the time, carrying students and an aide. However, no other injuries have been reported from the incident.
