Police said two gunmen opened fire at close range in Overbrook, striking the victim and several vehicles before fleeing.
PHILADELPHIA, PA — A 19-year-old man was shot and killed early Wednesday as he tried to enter a rideshare vehicle after leaving a friend’s home in Philadelphia’s Overbrook neighborhood, police said.
Officers responded to the 800 block of Wynnewood Road around 2:30 a.m. after reports of gunfire. Police found the 19-year-old suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and took him to Lankenau Hospital, where he died. His identity had not been publicly released Wednesday morning.
Chief Inspector Scott Small said investigators believe the victim had been spending time with friends and was preparing to leave in a rideshare vehicle when two gunmen approached at close range and began firing. Authorities recovered more than 40 spent shell casings at the scene, according to multiple local reports citing police.
The rideshare driver escaped as the shooting unfolded. Police said the driver’s vehicle was struck by gunfire, but the driver was not injured. The driver continued away from the scene before stopping near 52nd Street and Lancaster Avenue and contacting police. Investigators said the driver was cooperating with the investigation.
Gunfire also struck unattended vehicles parked in the area. Investigators were examining the scene and nearby surveillance cameras in an effort to determine the movements and identities of the two suspected shooters. Police had not released descriptions of the gunmen as of Wednesday morning.
Investigators also recovered a backpack beside the victim. Police said a firearm was inside, although initial news reports differed on how the weapon was described. Authorities had not determined publicly whether the backpack or firearm belonged to the victim, and investigators were working to establish how the weapon was connected to the shooting.
Police believe the 19-year-old was targeted, but authorities had not announced a motive. Investigators also had not disclosed what may have happened before the gunmen approached the rideshare vehicle. The available accounts indicated the shooting began before the victim was able to get safely inside.
The shooting prompted a homicide investigation centered on physical evidence from the scene and surveillance footage from cameras in the surrounding area. No arrests had been announced Wednesday morning, and police had not publicly identified either suspected gunman.
Authorities continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing, including ownership of the firearm recovered near the victim and the identities of the two shooters. Police had not announced additional suspects or a motive as the investigation remained active Wednesday.
