A confrontation involving a man and a woman unfolded near an SUV before the driver opened fire, surveillance video shows.
POMPANO BEACH, FL — Surveillance cameras captured a confrontation at a Pompano Beach gas station that escalated into gunfire Tuesday afternoon, leaving a man hospitalized as Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives investigate what led to the shooting.
The shooting was reported shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, near East Atlantic Boulevard and Northeast First Avenue. Deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to the Orion gas station, where authorities found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities had not publicly released his condition as of Wednesday morning.
Surveillance video from the gas station provides a partial account of the events before the shooting. The footage appears to show a man approaching a white Toyota SUV near the pumps and trying to open doors on the passenger side. A woman who had been inside the SUV eventually gets out, and the two become involved in a physical confrontation. The circumstances that led to the encounter and whether the people involved knew one another remained unclear.
The footage shows the confrontation ending before the man walks into the gas station’s convenience store. He emerges a short time later and walks near the SUV. Separate surveillance footage then appears to show the SUV’s driver confronting the man before multiple shots are fired. The wounded man runs from the immediate area after the gunfire.
Local news reports differed on some minor details of what the man purchased inside the store, but the available surveillance footage and reports agree on the broader sequence: the physical confrontation occurred first, the man entered the store, and the shooting followed after he came back outside. Authorities have not publicly said what was discussed between the people involved before either confrontation.
Sunny Miller, who works at a food truck at the gas station, told CBS News Miami that he heard several gunshots while working and took cover inside the truck. The shooting prompted a large law enforcement response, and investigators placed crime scene tape around part of the gas station while evidence was collected.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office said an individual was detained at the scene. The agency did not initially identify that person or specify the person’s connection to the shooting. NBC 6 South Florida reported that the driver remained at the scene during the investigation and that a person who appeared to be the same driver later returned to collect the SUV. Authorities have not announced an arrest or publicly identified the shooter.
The identities of the wounded man, the woman seen in the confrontation and the SUV’s driver had not been released. Investigators also had not announced any criminal charges. The fact that a person was detained does not by itself indicate that the person will be arrested or charged with a crime.
Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit and members of its Crime Scene Unit responded to investigate. Officials have not publicly disclosed a motive, explained the relationship among those involved or said whether investigators believe the shooting was legally justified. Those questions remain part of the active investigation.
The case remained under investigation Wednesday. Authorities had not announced charges or released additional information about the wounded man’s condition, and the circumstances that triggered the initial confrontation remained unclear.
