Young mother killed days after boyfriend’s release from jail for domestic violence

LANDOVER, MD – A Maryland family is grappling with the tragic loss of a loved one, allegedly killed by the father of her children just days after his release from jail. Authorities are now piecing together the events surrounding this domestic violence case.

The victim, 29-year-old Sharita Criswell, was discovered dead in an apartment complex in Landover. Her alleged killer, 32-year-old Harry Lindsey, was no stranger to her; he was her boyfriend and the father of her two daughters.

Jurise McCotter, Criswell’s mother, shared her heartache, recalling a conversation she had with Lindsey. “I told him never to lay hands on my daughter again,” she said. Despite his assurances, just four days after his release, Criswell was found dead.

Lindsey had recently been arrested for attempting to strangle Criswell. Prosecutors had argued that he should remain in custody without bond, but he was released. Shortly thereafter, he is accused of fatally shooting Criswell inside the Stratford Way apartment.

Upon arrival at the scene, police and first responders found Criswell already deceased. The incident has sparked conversations about domestic violence, with newly elected County Executive Aisha Braveboy emphasizing the urgent need for stricter measures against offenders.

Braveboy highlighted the tragic pattern of victims being harmed by those they trust and love. “These are the cases that hurt the most,” she said, reflecting on the need for change to prevent such tragedies.

Lindsey was apprehended in Capitol Heights on Sunday, tracked down using surveillance footage. He is currently held without bond, as officials express that this tragedy was preventable.

Local residents remain uneasy, reluctant to discuss the violent incident that has shaken their community.
