Woman shot multiple times at downtown Atlanta restaurant

Police say a dispute at Summit Cafeteria along Marietta Street escalated just before 8 a.m. Tuesday.

ATLANTA, GA — A woman was critically wounded Tuesday morning when a gunman opened fire inside Summit Cafeteria on Marietta Street near Centennial Olympic Park, police said. Officers nearby detained a suspect within minutes as he exited the restaurant with a firearm, and investigators recovered the weapon at the scene.

Authorities said the shooting unfolded during a dispute inside the cafeteria, steps from Georgia State University and the Five Points transit hub. Witnesses described a chaotic burst of gunfire that struck a woman multiple times. The man believed to be the intended target was not hit. As of late Tuesday, police had not released the suspect’s name or the victim’s identity, and charges were pending. The restaurant, located at 30 Marietta St. NW, remained closed while detectives processed the scene and gathered surveillance footage from inside and nearby businesses.

Workers at the cafeteria said the suspect argued with another patron shortly before 8 a.m., left the building, retrieved a gun and returned shooting. One employee, Jamal Fortson, said the gunman first aimed at a man and then began firing at others when those shots missed. “He shot her and then he stood over her and shot her two more times,” Fortson said, describing the moments that left customers and staff scrambling for cover across the front of the dining area. Georgia State University police officers who were already in the area heard the shots and rushed in, confronting the suspect at the entrance and detaining him with the firearm still in hand, according to police. The woman was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Atlanta police said preliminary evidence shows the attack stemmed from a dispute involving the suspect and at least one other person. Investigators were interviewing witnesses and reviewing video to determine whether anyone else was involved and to map the trajectory of bullets fired inside the small storefront restaurant. Police did not immediately provide the number of rounds fired or the caliber of the recovered weapon. The intended male target was uninjured, officers said. The victim’s age was not released. Detectives said they were working to contact relatives and to confirm whether the wounded woman had any role in the earlier dispute, a point that witnesses described differently after the shooting.

Summit Cafeteria sits along a busy block of Marietta Street within walking distance of Centennial Olympic Park and Georgia State’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business. Morning foot traffic often picks up as commuters transfer at Five Points and students move between classes. Nearby workers said the gunfire ended the breakfast rush in seconds, leaving chairs overturned and glass scattered near the front. The shooting comes as downtown businesses prepare for heavy visitor traffic tied to major events this year, including pre–World Cup activities and conventions at the Georgia World Congress Center. Residents said they worry high-profile incidents near the park and transit station can dampen momentum for new retail and office projects that have been trying to draw more daily activity back to the core.

Police said the suspect was taken first into custody by campus officers and then turned over to Atlanta police for booking. Formal charges had not been announced by Tuesday evening. Detectives said they plan to confer with the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office once interviews and evidence reviews are complete. Investigators expect to release additional details after they confirm the sequence of events on video and collect ballistic evidence from the restaurant. No other victims were found. The next public update from police is expected after warrants are filed and the suspect makes an initial court appearance, typically within 24 to 48 hours of arrest.

Outside the cafeteria Tuesday, yellow tape cordoned off the storefront as lunch-hour traffic slowed along Marietta Street. A few customers who arrived to eat turned away after seeing the closed sign. Fortson, still shaken, described officers pulling up “right at the front” after the shots. Another worker, who declined to give her name, said the woman collapsed near the counter as bystanders shouted for towels and called 911. A Georgia State student passing by said he saw officers escorting a handcuffed man from the door while others swept the sidewalk for shell casings. “It was real frightening,” Fortson said. “And then it got quiet.”

As of Wednesday morning, the woman remained hospitalized in critical condition at Grady, police said. Investigators were still reviewing surveillance footage and completing interviews. The restaurant was expected to remain closed until crime-scene processing is finished, with potential charging decisions to follow later this week.
