Woman murdered and dismembered by husband

LOS ANGELES, CA – A tragic story has unfolded in Los Angeles, where a Scottish woman, who moved to the U.S. to pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer, was found murdered in her Hollywood apartment. Her husband has been taken into custody as the primary suspect.

The victim, identified by her family as 37-year-old John Bunyan, moved from the UK to the United States with aspirations of becoming a defense attorney. Her family is now seeking assistance to bring her remains back to Scotland, according to a crowdfunding page set up in her memory.

Neighbors described Bunyan as friendly, funny, and kind. Authorities have charged 25-year-old Jonathan Renteria with murder and mutilation of human remains. Court documents reveal that Bunyan, known legally as June Renteria, had been married to the suspect for a year, and the couple shared a one-month-old baby.

Renteria was discovered in a Ventura County hotel room with a self-inflicted wound and a note confessing to the murder. Prosecutors allege that during a recorded interview, Renteria admitted to having an argument with Bunyan over her post-pregnancy weight, which escalated when she threatened to leave with their child.

The court documents detail Renteria’s confession to using a chokehold on Bunyan, leading to her death. The court has set his bail at $4 million following these revelations. Surveillance footage allegedly shows Renteria leaving their home with the baby and later returning with garbage bags, which prosecutors claim contained dismembered remains.

A neighbor recounted that Bunyan had confided in her about being in an abusive relationship and had expressed fear for her life. Bunyan, who ran a paralegal business, was dedicated to helping lawyers defend non-citizen clients in criminal and immigration cases.

Her family is raising funds to repatriate Bunyan’s body to the UK, where she can be laid to rest. Meanwhile, Renteria, who has pleaded not guilty, is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing in November.

This case highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence, particularly against women. Resources such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline are available for those in need of help.
