Ninth grader dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound during class field trip

OREM, UT – A tragic incident unfolded today during a junior high school field trip, leaving a community in mourning. A ninth-grade student from Canyon View Junior High School died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

The somber mood was palpable outside the school as students gathered, placing candles near the school sign to honor their classmate. Concerned parents are now grappling with the decision of whether to send their children back to school.

Ian Campbell, a fellow student, recounted the shocking moment. “We were playing spikeball when we heard a loud pop. At first, I thought it was just a bottle or a chip bag,” Campbell said. The realization that it was a gunshot left the students in shock.

The field trip was held at South Fork Park in Provo Canyon, as confirmed by the Alpine School District. The district swiftly transported students back to the school following the incident.

In a message to parents, school administrators outlined the steps being taken to support the grieving community. Campbell expressed his own reluctance to return to school immediately, saying, “I probably won’t go for the rest of the week. I knew him pretty well, and it’s just sad.”

The district has assured parents that all other students and teachers are safe. Counseling services are being offered to students, staff, and families to help them cope with the tragedy.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this,” said a district representative. Despite the incident, classes will resume for the remainder of the week, although parent-teacher conferences have been postponed.

The community continues to process the loss, with many offering prayers and support to the family and friends of the deceased student.
